Counseling Services

All counseling services are with professional counselors who are familiar with university life. All you need to do to meet with a counselor is to call the office at 574.807.7370, this number is answered by counseling center staff and is completely confidential. Up to eight (8) free sessions are available each year to full-time students at no charge. If you are a part time student there is a minimal fee.

Counselors are available to talk to students about anything a student wishes to discuss: there is no reason a student cannot come to talk to someone, everyone is welcome. Please do not feel you have to wait until it is a “big problem.” Often talking in a confidential setting where you can freely talk about anything is helpful and keeps small concerns from becoming bigger. On the other hand, big problems and crises can be overwhelming and feel like they cannot be fixed: please let us help with these also, they almost always can get better and school gets to be OK again. Please let us at the counseling office know if we can be of any service to you.

Understanding the Counselor's Role

Counselors can help with frustrations, feeling overwhelmed, anxiety, depression, moodiness, trauma, aftermath of assault or abuse, ADD/ADHD, learning problems, being annoyed with roommates, overeating/undereating, not sleeping well, relationship problems and much more. We also can do some assessment to figure out how things such as anxiety, depression or attention struggles might be making school difficult for you. We offer all this in individual counseling, couples counseling, group counseling and assessment in the Wellness Center. If you would like more services, such as seeing a medical doctor or psychiatrist to talk about whether medication might also help, we can easily help you connect to a nearby, off-campus doctor at your convenience.

Education programs are also things we do. We can offer workshops, seminars, and public talks on a variety of topics of interest to students. We like to come to classes, hold meetings in the Wellness Center, talk in Sufficient Grounds, meet in the Center for Academic Success or hold conferences in a number of other places on campus. Please let us know what you would like to know more about and where you would like us to talk:  we are flexible.

Student Health Services

Student health services is a Registered Nurse service that promotes health and wellness for Bethel students. Assessments, first aid, and referral for ill and injured students is provided on an appointment or walk-in basis.  The campus nurse can recommend appropriate over the counter treatments and provide guidance on when the student should seek a higher level of medical care with a local/family physician, walk-in clinic, or urgent care. Nurse visits are free of charge, but there is a minimal cash fee for certain testing, such as strep throat and urine testing.  If test results are positive the campus nurse may need to refer to a higher level of medical care.
