Bethel University is offering two free boot camps in cloud computing this summer. Boot Camp 0 – Intro to Computing & the Cloud, goes from June 6-July 1, Mon.-Fri. from 1-5 p.m., and aims to take the participant from novice to knowledgeable in just four weeks. Boot Camp 1 – Deep Dive into Cloud Computing, runs July 12-Sept. 1, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. This training will prepare participants for the associate level certification with Google Cloud. This summer, Bethel University will offer its annual academic and sports summer camps for kids. Academic camps in science, theatre and art will be held on July 11-15 and July 18-22. Sports camps run from May through July, offering a variety of overnight and day camps for campers ages 8-18. Learn more.
Bethel Women's Track & Field finished the final day of the NCCAA National Championship at the top of the standings for the program's eighth national title and third outdoor banner in three completed seasons—2020 championships were cancelled due to COVID-19. This brings the Pilots' total team national championships to 45 for all sports. All three individual national championship performances on the day—Madison Kauffman in Hammer Throw, Jada Parzygnot in Pole Vault, and MarKalah Barnes in Shot Put—hit NAIA standards, as did the podium finish for the 4x100m Relay.
Amanda Slaughter has been named vice president for enrollment management at Bethel University, beginning her new role May 23. Slaughter is an enrollment management professional with more than 18 years of experience in higher education, working with undergraduate traditional, nontraditional and graduate students through enrollment, financial aid, career services and student retention at CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities) institutions in California, Pennsylvania and Mississippi.
This year, nearly 320 students will graduate from Bethel University. The 2022 commencement ceremony will be held Saturday, May 7, in the Wiekamp Athletic Center on Bethel’s campus. This single ceremony at 2 p.m., includes traditional undergraduate, adult and graduate programs. Shirley Hoogstra, president of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, will be the speaker. The event will also be livestreamed on our homepage and masks will be optional for attendees and participants.

Bethel University will host its fifth annual Bethel Gala on April 30 at 5:30 p.m., in the Wiekamp Athletic Center on Bethel’s campus, with singer/songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman as the special guest. Chapman is the most awarded artist in Christian music history and best-selling author of his memoir, “Between Heaven and the Real World: My Story.”

On behalf of the Bethel University Board of Trustees, Chair Eric Kinsman announces Barbara Bellefeuille, Ed.D., has been officially named the eighth president of Bethel University. Bellefeuille has served as interim president of the university since June 1, 2021, and is the first female to serve in the university’s highest leadership role.
Bethel University recently received a $1 million gift from the Mely and Rick Rey Foundation Inc. Rick, a 1977 graduate of Bethel University, owns Specialty Products and Polymers Inc., Niles, Mich. The gift from the Reys supports four areas they are passionate about – long-term funding through an endowment, support of international students, scholarships and the chemistry department. Rey, who attended Bethel as an international student from the Philippines said Bethel was like a life preserver for him. Rey says he wants to provide for current and future students.

Bethel University is set to host the first-ever Starting Small Summit on April 13, 2022. This event provides the South Bend/Mishawaka community an opportunity to learn from high-profile entrepreneurs from around the world. Moderated by Bethel University senior Cameron Nagle, founder and host of Starting Small, the summit will feature entrepreneurial stories from Joe Foster, founder of Reebok; Stacy Madison, founder of Stacy’s Pita Chips and BeBOLD Bars, and Dr. Jonathan B. Levine, founder of JBL New York City & GLO Science.
On Mon., Jan. 17, Bethel University’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council will hold an event to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The day will begin with chapel from 10-11 a.m., in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Auditorium, followed by guided prayer led by local pastors from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m., in the Everest-Rohrer Rotunda. Also, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., a pop-in style activity will focus on prayers for unity, reconciliation and peace, and will be held in the Rotunda.

Bethel University announces an exciting partnership with Youth For Christ (YFC) USA, which will allow YFC staff members around the USA to complete a college education at a reduced rate. YFC has become an extension site with Bethel University Extension Studies (BU-X). The initiative will allow YFC staff and volunteers to enroll at Bethel University for an online program to earn a fully accredited associate or bachelor’s degree. It will also allow recently graduated high school seniors who are interested in joining the YFC staff to participate while serving in a local YFC USA chapter.

Robby Prenkert ’92, D.Litt., has been named Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Bethel University, beginning his new role July 1. Prenkert has served the university for 25 years, most recently as Chair, Literature & Language Studies; Associate Professor of English & Humanities; and First Year Experience (FYE) Coordinator. Prior to his faculty position, Prenkert was a resident director, men’s JV basketball coach, mentoring program coordinator and adjunct faculty.

In April 2021, Bethel University received a $255,000 Labs for Industry Futures and Transformation (LIFT) grant, allowing for greater educational opportunities related to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The revised Phase II proposal of the LIFT grant was presented in December 2020. The $255,00 total project budget includes $230,000 for Phase II and $25,000 of remaining Phase I planning grant funds.

Today, members of Bethel University’s esports team, along with President Chenoweth, celebrated the ribbon cutting of the $1 million Bendix E-Sports Arena, located in the Century Center in South Bend. The new 6,000 square foot arena features a 36 PC gaming center, Nintendo and Xbox gaming stations and a 600-seat theater capable of hosting regional and national e-sports events. This space, just about 10 min. from campus, will be home to BU’s co-ed esports team. Chenoweth spoke at the event, sharing Bethel’s heart behind esports.

Bethel University is pleased to announce Lissa Diaz as the new Director of Marketing and Communication. A 2007 Bethel graduate, with degrees in English and Communication, Diaz has worked in the university’s Office of Marketing and Communication for nearly 12 years.
Bethel University has added a graduate level leadership program in business to supplement the existing MBA program. This new program, the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership (MLED), emphasizes qualitative business disciplines rather than the quantitative components of accounting, economics and finance found in the MBA. The MLED is a professional degree for people involved in management and leadership.
Bethel University announces that it plans to resume residential, face-to-face classes in August, and is investing significant human and financial resources to accommodate COVID-19-related scenarios that could emerge. A spectrum of options will allow the university to make adjustments based on real-time information from federal, state and local authorities.

The Bethel University Theatre Department is holding a 24-Hour Theatre Project, starting on the evening of Fri., Feb. 7. Join them on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 8 p.m. for their performances in the Kelly Auditorium located in the Middleton Hall of Science on Bethel’s campus.
Nineteen students and four faculty and staff members from the Bethel University Theatre Department recently traveled to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Region 3 in Madison, Wisc., where they presented their work, saw shows, made connections in the field of theatre, attended workshops, stage managed events, and volunteered.
Bethel University will host its third annual Give Back Gala on April 25 at 5:30 p.m., in the Wiekamp Athletic Center on Bethel’s campus with J.C. Watts as the keynote speaker. Bethel’s overall graduation rate was 71% – 10% higher than that of our peer comparison group, which consists of nine schools in our region with similar size, mission and demographics.

The Bethel University Center for Academic Success wants to help students relieve stress this finals week. They will provide a variety of activities, including “kitten therapy” courtesy of Pet Refuge. Tues., Dec. 10, from 10 a.m.-noon kittens will be available to pet, hold and play with on the first floor of the Miller-Moore Academic Center.
The Bethel University Athletic Department announces the formation of an Esports team, set to begin in fall 2020. A partnership with the City of South Bend will give the Bethel team a dedicated practice room within the state-of-the art LAN cafe and access to a 600-seat Esports arena with Bethel organizing and hosting competitions at the Century Center. Christopher Hess, Bethel’s associate athletic director, is leading the charge for getting the program up and running, including a search for a coach for the team.
At their fall meeting, the Bethel University Board of Trustees gave approval to break ground on a $3.9 Million Athletic Training Facility, to be built on Bethel’s campus. Construction is expected to begin in the spring with completion by the end of 2020. The building is funded by donations from Bethel’s GROW campaign, with $284,000 still being raised for equipment and furniture to furnish the inside.
The concert will be held on Bethel’s campus in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center Auditorium. Performances are Fri., Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sat., Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
The Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble will perform on Thurs., Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center Auditorium on Bethel’s campus. Then on Fri., Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m., the Percussion Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra will perform at the same location.

The Weaver Art Gallery presents the “Essence and Matter” art exhibition, featuring the work of Ramiro Rodriquez and Laurie S. Rousseau. The artwork will be on display Nov. 8, 2019-Jan. 30, 2020, in the Weaver Gallery and Great Hall, located in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center. An opening reception for this show will take place on Fri., Nov. 8 at 11 a.m.
Bethel University will host Go2BU, a special three-day, two-night campus visit experience for junior and senior students, transfer students and parents from Thursday, Oct. 24 to Saturday, Oct. 26. The event is designed to expose students to campus and give them a taste of life as a BU student. On Monday, May 6, Bethel College officially began operating as Bethel University. The transition has been more than a year in the making, since the Bethel College Board of Trustees voted to change the name in April 2018.
This year, more than 415 students plan to participate in Bethel College’s two commencement ceremonies, which will be held Saturday, May 4, in the Wiekamp Athletic Center on Bethel’s campus. This will be the last class to graduate from Bethel College before we become Bethel University on May 6. The 10 a.m. commencement includes adult programs, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) completion and graduate programs. The 5 p.m. commencement includes all traditional undergraduate programs, Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

The Bethel College track & field team are coming home with a banner for the second straight weekend, as the men's team finished off their repeat of the NCCAA Indoor National Championship, overtaking host Cedarville (Ohio) on the final day of competition to earn their sixth NCCAA national championship. The women's team held serve with a second-place finish by a wide margin.

Bethel College announces a new major in Computer Science, to begin in the fall of 2019. The program was created in response to the increasing local, regional and national demand for professionals skilled in the areas of technology and software development, and builds on Bethel’s existing Computer Science minor.
This new Field Scholar Program is a partnership with local employers to provide a low- or no-debt option for students to obtain a bachelor’s degree from Bethel. It is designed for commuter students who will take about half of their coursework online and be paired with an employer who will guarantee work (15-20 hours per week during academic year and 40 hours per week during the summer). The first cohort will begin in the fall of 2019.
The Bethel College School of Nursing announces that it is now offering a direct admission option for exceptional high school seniors who meet specific criteria. This option allows students to be granted admission into the School of Nursing with their college acceptance, instead of waiting until their freshman year to apply.

Steve Govorko, adjunct professor of kinesiology, is partnering with Aleck’s Home Medical to raise awareness of the struggles of persons with physical disabilities. On Tues., Sept. 18, 10 of his PE Methods for Elementary Students class will use wheelchairs from Aleck’s to get around campus for the afternoon, and then journal about their experience. The class will meet at 2 p.m. in room 100, in the Wiekamp Athletic Center on Bethel’s campus, to get their wheelchairs.

Beaty previously served as the magazine's youngest and first woman managing editor. She is the author of "A Woman's Place: A Christian Vision for Your Calling in the Office, the Home, and the World" (Simon & Schuster). A native of Dayton, Ohio, and graduate of Calvin College, she has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic and lives in the Chicago suburbs.

Department Chair and Assistant Professor of Art Michael May, Adjunct Professor of 2D Design & Digital Photography Jeffrey Combs and Adjunct Professor of Ceramics Kari Black will have their work showcased at the event.
Bethel College will celebrate the naming of the Therese and John Gardner Softball Field on Friday, March 31 at 2:45 p.m. The recently constructed softball stadium is located on the corner of Liberty Drive and West LaSalle Avenue on Bethel’s campus.

The Bethel College School of Nursing has been ranked seventh in the nation on the list of “Top RN Degree Programs for 2017.” The list, compiled by Accredited Schools Online, ranked schools all over the country based on criteria such as cost, graduation rates and resources available to them. With a score of 97.20 out of 100, Bethel is the only Indiana college to appear in the top 30 and the only CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities) school to appear in the top 20.

The Bethel College Education Department recently received accreditation for all of its programs through 2023, based on the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards. All accreditation standards were met, with no stipulations.

Two actors and one director from the internationally acclaimed Stratford Festival will present a four-day residency at Bethel College. Bethel is the first private college to do a residency with this prestigious group, who has previously conducted workshops at Michigan State University, University of Missouri and Wayne State University.

Adults interested in a ministry degree from Bethel College now have a new option for taking classes in St. Joseph, Mich. The satellite location will serve adult students pursuing an associates or bachelor’s degree in Bible and Ministry, as well as graduate students working towards a Master of Arts in Ministry or Master of Arts in Theological Studies.
Last week, Bethel College began a Hispanic Initiative, offering bilingual adults a new option for obtaining a college degree. The Spanish-assisted business degree is the first of its kind in the United States and is geared towards Hispanic adults who have the ability to earn a college degree, but have stayed out of the classroom due to language barriers.

Bethel College’s graduating class raised money to create a prayer garden on campus. The 50-year reunion class of 1966 joined in the fundraising efforts to make this a combined gift from both classes, a tradition for Bethel alumni. A groundbreaking for the prayer garden will take place outdoors near the Sailor Residential Center on Saturday, April 30 at 3:30 p.m., as part of Bethel’s graduation weekend.

The system is used for family planning and is also highly effective for identifying and treating health issues such as endometriosis, pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, polycystic ovarian disease, infertility, and recurrent miscarriage, among others.
Community members have the opportunity to become a certified community health worker (CHW) by attending a three-day training at Bethel College, April 25-27. The deadline to apply is April 18.
